Recently, I had a couple of clients who wanted to resolve physical pain in specific areas. Although we have made great progress in other areas, certain pain patterns were lingering.
As I listened to their concerns, I sensed that the priority was to help them cultivate a better relationship with themselves instead of addressing the pain head-on.
For one woman, we worked on developing a compassionate relationship with her body. For another, it was about cultivating a more intimate connection with the Divine. Both approaches are different ways to honor our wholeness.
Pain can bring a sense of urgency that narrows our points of view causing us to react. We become eager to avoid it, numb it, or fight it. My experience is: stubborn pain often means the body has important messages for us.
In 2010, I was assigned to work on a high profile project for my employer. Aside from the huge learning curve, I encountered ethical issues in the workplace and another community. A painful skin rash around my neck erupted.
For 6 months, I tried “everything” to heal the rash but to no avail. The breakthrough came when I drummed up the courage to speak to the heads of the organizations about the ethical issues that had bothered me. Within 2 weeks, the skin rash subsided.
It is easy to get caught up in the pain and overlook the messages from the body. In my case, my body couldn’t tolerate how I didn’t stand up for myself. The suppressed anger led to skin inflammation that burned and itched for months.
Since that incident, I have become more cognizant about how I process situations so that my body does not need to protest in pain. When I respond to issues by honoring myself instead of hiding, situations resolve inexplicably.
I have learned that situations in life are props for us to grow and evolve. Instead of spending time and energy chewing on who is right or wrong, I put a lot of focus on how to show up in generative ways.
If it weren’t for the “perpetrators” in 2010, I would have been complacent about finding my voice. I have left my former profession, but the development of my voice plays an even more crucial role in my current vocation.
Instead of letting adversities be the catalysts for change, it would be great if we are motivated to develop ourselves when things are fine. To me, healing is really about awakening our hidden capacities while addressing the pain points.
Unearthing our latent capacities is so important because of accelerating changes in the world and our consciousness. Some call this spiritual awakening or energetic upgrade; others call it developing the new human.
In energetic upgrade, high frequency energy tries to enter our bodies. We might experience higher sensitivity or sleep disturbance, feel overwhelm or spacey, or have stiffness or mysterious sensations in the body.
There are specific ways to integrate the energy with our cells and nervous systems, expediting healing and developing our latent capacities. If we limit the interpretation of the symptoms as problems, we prolong our suffering.
Earlier this year, I wrote about The Power of Reframing. The message from this blog is another example of that. Next time you experience pain, take note of your reactions, and then listen deeply to what your body wants to tell you.
